O.A. Frequently Asked Questions

Curious About O.A? Find Your Answers Here.

How did O.A. start?

In 1958, Rozanne S., the founder of Overeaters Anonymous (O.A.), experienced a pivotal moment at a Gamblers Anonymous (GA) meeting. While listening to the shared experiences of fellow GA members, she recognized a parallel to her struggles with compulsive overeating. Inspired by the Twelve Step and Twelve Tradition program, she realized it could provide a path to recovery.

Driven to transform her life and achieve a healthier weight, Rozanne sought others who shared her experiences. In 1960, she connected with Jo S., a neighbor who also struggled with compulsive overeating. Together, they found Bernice S. and organized the first O.A. meeting in Los Angeles, California, on January 19, 1960.

Today, O.A. has grown into a global community with approximately 6,500 weekly meetings in over 75 countries. With a membership of around 60,000 individuals, O.A. offers support and guidance to compulsive eaters across ten geographic regions and a virtual region.

How do OA members achieve a healthy weight?

Overeaters Anonymous (O.A.) centers its recovery program on the principle of abstinence. By acknowledging past struggles with compulsive eating and abandoning the notion of willpower as a sole solution, individuals can commit to abstaining from overeating, one day at a time. While diets may aid in weight loss, they often intensify cravings and compulsive behaviors.

O.A.’s approach differs from traditional diet plans. We do not provide dietary advice, counseling, or treatment services. Our focus is on spiritual and emotional recovery. Members seeking nutritional guidance or professional help are encouraged to consult qualified experts. We fully support the use of such resources as part of a comprehensive recovery plan.

Why is OA anonymous and what does that mean?

As an O.A.member, anonymity ensures that meeting discussions remain confidential. Only those present can share what’s said. Privacy extends to membership as well; no one outside the program can reveal your involvement. This fosters an egalitarian environment, free from hierarchies or public figures. In O.A., external status holds no significance. We connect on a deeper level, sharing a common struggle and a shared path to recovery.
